Welcome to CONTACT!

The CONTACT project supports teaching initiatives in Classics and Archaeology departments aimed at bringing students closer to material culture. CONTACT is an FDTL5-funded project based at the University of Sheffield, operating with partners in the Universities of Leicester and York. The project runs for three years from November 2005.

CONTACT aims to address perceived problems in teaching material culture in archaeology and classics through creating real and virtual networks of students, expertise and material. The real networks bring students into contact with material with the mediation of experts, and the virtual networks backs up these experiences with virtual material and expertise tied into the students’ real experiences.

In its first year, CONTACT ran two pilot projects at York and Sheffield. In 2006-2007, CONTACT initiated new partnerships with 12 projects based in eight Universities in England. These new projects, funded by CONTACT and drawing on our resources but planned and developed locally, are currently being implemented and are available to test from this website.

We want to share our success with you and invite you to join our growing community. We can work with you in designing your own teaching tool, using your own material or accessing our growing collections—all powered by technology specially tailored for teaching material culture online. For more information, please take a look around our website, especially at the newsletter and the call for participation. Please contact the project manager for any further information.
